Jim Carroll Created School Shootings in His Consciousness

School shootings were first created as a vehicle for artistic expression of high school angst by New York novelist Jim Carroll in a dream sequence from his 1978 autobiographical novel The Basketball Diaries.   When the Hollywood film version starring Leonardo DiCaprio was released in 1995 it inspired the first school shooting in Columbine, Colorado.

There were no school shootings prior to the film release of The Basketball Diaries in 1995. Now all the kids want to emulate trendy trench coat shooters. School shootings were created by the publishing and entertainment industries and they are perpetuated by the media on a 24 hour basis.

If we want to stop kiddie violence we have to stop glorifying it and we have to stop making money off of it.

Trench Coat Trendsetter

The Columbine copycats took photographs of themselves wearing trench coats and brandishing shot guns just like Leonardo DiCaprio in the big screen sales job for school shootings.  If we want to see the real  enemy all we have to do is gaze into the hypnotic mirror of pop culture.  School shootings were created on the media of paper by a New York artist and now school shootings are perpetrated in perpetuity on the school yard in real life and then again in the media as a never-ending serpent of violence worship.   The names of the Columbine shooters are intentionally omitted from this article because they should not be remembered and neither should Jim Carroll.

I No Longer Recommend Jim Carroll to Friends

When The Basketball Diaries was first published in paperback I bought a copy and I also introduced my best friend Bob Hines to the book and he also purchased a copy.  After he read it Bob said to me why do you read this junkie shit?  Of course at the time I bristled at my good friends negative review of the writer that I had “discovered.”  Now 40 years later Bob was right Jim Carroll should not be remembered for the school shootings in his art works or his whining junkie ouvre.

Goodbye Cruel Movies

Mr. Carroll’s body of work is very dark and despairing. I don’t  read anything like his work anymore. I don’t enjoy low life art any more.  At one time it held my fascination but no longer.  I can’t even watch most movies today because they are so dark and violent.  I no longer recommend the books of Jim Carroll to friends.

Jim Carroll and the names of the actors in the Columbine school shootings should be erased from history.  Mr. Carroll was ill from Hepatitis C and he died slumped over his typewriter from a heart attack at age 60 after carrying all that anger around. I know about carrying around excess anger . . .
