WHICH HIGH END GYM SHOULD I JOIN: The Bay Club or Equinox?
How Do You Choose Where to Live?
The answer to both questions is the same: location, location, location. Equinox has 100% cotton towels but the Bay Club has landmark properties in King Harbor and Pacific Palisades so head for the Bay. The high life is lived on the water.
Equinox converted an old LA Fitness in Marina del Rey, that shows their mass market cookie cutter approach. To their credit EQ did upgrade the entire club and steam room, but the place is just too tiny. The BC sold their small clubs, the old Spectrum locations in Santa Barbara, to Gold’s Gym. EQ locations are smaller than BC.
Both of these gyms are expensive so you want the best experience for your money. They both have excellent steam rooms and saunas that are always working. You need a large gym to spread out in. If you live in the LA/South Bay beach cities, an all Bay Club membership for $150 is the best deal in my opinion.
PARKING BONUS: When I recently moved back to LA, I joined the BC because of the King Harbor location. When you buy an all club membership in King Harbor, you get an M for Marina decal for your vehicle. You can park for free all day, workout, eat, and then hang out in Moonstone Park and be entertained by the packs of seals barking like fat hungry dogs.
Join Bay Club for the Spaciousness
For evening workouts try the huge Hawthorne BC located off Rosecrans Blvd. underneath the elevated train station in the South Bay. It’s massive and even has a Jacuzzi in the men’s locker room. Most gyms are too crowded at night but not this one. Plus there is no time limit on the ample parking.
The BC is managed by Thomas and Tony and seems to run a little smoother than most clubs. EQ is like a fucking nightclub. Plus BC has Josie Kramer, the laughing yoga teacher.
