Advanced Meditation Practice
Chakras Are Energy Centers
The purpose of this post is to give you an intuitive jump start into chakra meditation practice. The chakras are the seven major energy centers of your body, mind and soul. Meditate your energy flowing up through the grosser basic instinctual parts of your body up into your heart, mind and higher consciousness. The goal of chakra meditation is to purify consciousness merging up through the body, mind and soul to unite with universal consciousness in the crown of the head.
The following instructional guide on meditation practice is based upon and quotes freely from Kundalini Yoga by Sri Sivananda:
Attainment of spiritual power through meditation practice depends upon the amount of concentration you spend at the different chakras. Success at meditation practice depends upon your temperament and capacity. Some people can obtain the desired goal by one type of visualization and others by different methods. Therefore if you are not making progress or success in your chakra meditation practice with one application then try something different. Meditate upon each chakra by concentrating on your base, physical functions and energy lightening and purifying upwards into higher and higher forms of consciousness.
It is important not to stop advancing your meditation practice once you achieve a little peace of mind or minor healing. A lot of people crystalize their meditation practice and keep it static once they achieve a little spiritual power. You may be healed of a physical ailment or emotional discomfort and so you stop advancing because you feel better. However if you continually advance your practice by experimenting with things such as visualizing the chakras rotating as they draw energy into your meditation then eventually you can attain the pure formless consciousness of the mystic called samadhi.
When you get to a certain spiritual level, you may be so satisfied that you stop learning and use your spiritual power for fame and fortune. Therefore you are not able to proceed further and attain perfection. Don’t stop with metaphysical healing go on to mysticism and universal consciousness. Attention and authenticity will lead you to success.
Dharana Means Concentration
Fix the mind on your heart energy center. Focus on the in and out flow of the breath merging with your heart and then keep your attention there throughout your meditation practice. This concentration is called Dharana, the Sanskrit word for concentration. You can then also concentrate internally on any one of the seven Chakras, you do not have to meditate starting from the root chakra up for these beginning exercises. Please just try to intuitively deepen your meditative state with more and more sensitivity to your energy centers.
Attention plays a prominent part in concentration. Once you develop the power of attention you will have better and better concentration. If you are emotionally disordered with passion and desire you will not be able to concentrate because you find will be in motion as it moves from thought to thought. Focus on your heart energy center and keep it there. This is concrete concentration. There can be no concentration without something upon which the mind may rest.
If you want to increase your power of concentration you will have to reduce your worldly activities. Practise concentration until your mind is well established on the object of concentration. When the mind runs away from the object, bring it back again.
When concentration is deep and intense, all other senses cannot operate. If you practice concentration for one hour daily you will develop tremendous psychic powers.
A concentrated mind purifies and calms the surging emotions, strengthens the current of thought and clarifies the ideas. What was cloudy and hazy before, becomes clearer and definite. What was very difficult before becomes easy now. What was complex, bewildering and confusing before, now comes intuitively.
You can achieve anything by concentration and intuition. Nothing is impossible for one who regularly practises concentration. Clairvoyance, clairaudience, mesmerism, hypnotism, thought-reading, music, mathematics and other sciences depend upon concentration.
Apple Meditation: Relax into meditative mind. Close your eyes. Breath in deeply and exhale out fully. See what happens when you think of an apple. You may think of its color, shape, size, smell, different parts such as skin, pulp, seeds, etc. You may think of where the apple came from, Washington State or Apple Valley. You may think of its acidic or sweet taste and its effects on the digestive system and blood.
Through the law of mental association, ideas of other fruits may now try to illegally enter your meditative mind. The mind may begin to entertain some other extraneous ideas. It may begin to wander. It may think of meeting a friend at Starbucks at 4 p.m. It may think of buying a latte or water. Place your mind back upon the apple. There should not be any break in the line of thinking. You must not entertain any other thought which is not connected with the subject on hand. The mind will try its level best to run in its old grooves. You will have to struggle hard in the beginning. The attempt is somewhat like going up a steep hill. You will rejoice and feel immense happiness when you get success in concentration.
Now remove the apple from your mind and continue meditating upon the apple . . .
