Sid Salkow – Televison & Motion Picture Director

Sid tried to talk me out of trying to become a film director, however I failed to take his excellent direction

The determining factor on whether you are “old” or not depends upon the degree of control you still maintain over your bodily functions.  One of the first signs of this “oldness” is the loss of bladder elasticity.  However for me the slight loss of the unconscious control over the corners of my mouth is how I have determined that I am now “old”.   When I was in film school directing class spittle would build up at the corners of Professor Sid Salkow’s mouth as he lectured.  Salkow was younger then than I am now.  Now I am old and I have to keep a handkerchief handy to keep the corners of my mouth dry.  This is a blog about finding new direction in life because I think I should have been an oceanographer.

Sidney Salkow (1911-2000) was a great man and Hollywood “B” movie director who gave me really good direction when he tried to talk me out of working in the movie business.  Actually Sid was trying to talk my whole film directing class at CSUN out of going into the entertainment industry.   Nobody in that film directing class listened to Hollywood movie director Salkow and nobody in that class ever became a film director.  Nobody even became a television director and Sid directed over a hundred television productions.

“I don’t know why you people want to go into this business”, Professor Salkow would sputter in his thick Brooklyn accent.  At the time I thought Mr. Salkow was out of line but now I see that he was trying to tell us something very useful and important.  Sid was giving me the greatest career direction anybody could at that time but I refused to listen to him.  After I failed brilliantly out of the film and music business I became a paralegal but I really wanted to be an oceanographer.

When I was twelve years old I wanted to be an oceanographer and was preparing by studying math and science in school.  Then I started playing guitar for a hobby.  Soon I developed delusions of grandeur.  All was doing was bashing out “Gloria” on my Sears guitar and wailing G-l-o-r-i-a in my bedroom with my little brother pounding on something I forget what, but it was not a drum set.  I should have become an oceanographer.

Charlie Davis

The person from my class at CSUN who developed the best career direction was the late Charlie Davis from Tucson, Arizona.  Charlie was the VP of Post-Production at 20th-Century Fox in 2008.  One Saturday while clearing out some shelves in his garage Charlie was bitten by a spider.   He went into a coma and passed away three days later at age 51.  He left two young sons and a wife.  I still get all choked up when I think about what a good person Charlie Davis was.

One night back when we were still in college Charlie Davis was driving my car because I was drunk.  We were on the 10 Freeway coming home from a party in Ontario and Charlie was trying to give me excellent direction on how to slow down and love my girlfriend better but I was too drunk to listen to him.   I should have become an oceanographer.
